I'm So Screwed

I had time to kill today before a meeting in town, so I thought I'd bop by and look at the cars I'm considering next.

Driving by the local Porsche dealership, I saw this little Atlas Grey beauty:

It's a dealer demo 2006 Cayman S, ~3k miles, optioned very lightly....that is to say, just exactly how I would do it. All it really had was PASM active suspension, factory short shift kit, and- as the only nod to luxo & weight- a Bose surround sound stereo.

Ended up taking it out for a 120 mph test drive with one of the salesdoods. Amazing car...just mind-blowing. the grip on this car...wow. The brakes will pop your eyes right the feck out of their sockets (demoed by a 100-0 simulated holyf*ckingsh*t stop- with hands off the wheel during the whole stomp) and even at this car's lateral limits the controlability was just 100% idiot-resistant. Mindblowing. This is the most controllable car at the edges of the envelope I have ever driven.

The planets have not aligned properly yet...but man. The Porsche is now officially in the lead as the replacement for the Holden.

Now, I've screwed myself. I want one.

Oh...I never did listen to the stereo. That boxer engine is music enough. Sweet.

I need to drive a BMW Z4 M-Coupe next. One thing I noticed, however, is that general visibility from the cockpit in the Porsche is way better than the M-Coupe, where rear vis is like looking down a tunnel...a big deal when carving LA traffic. MPG will be better in the Cayman S too...though that's pretty far down the selection matrix.

I'm thinking, why the hell are you concerned with MPG if you drive a porsche? So you gonna sell ur GTO/Monaro? I'm poor, care to donate to those who haven't made it big yet? JP.
Seriously though, good choice.

Groucho, you and I have been "back-and-forthing" on this forum for a long time. I just can't picture you driving anything else BUT the Monaro. So it's got 100k. I think it's just broken in. Why sell now?

You should have been at the Charity event I attended Thursday night in Westport. There was a silent auction for lots of good stuff but they reserved the three biggest $$ items for a traditional auction after the meal was served.

Topping the list was a bright red 2007 Cayman S. It was parked in the circular drive of the club where the event was held, right near the entrance, so that guests could ogle it on their way in. Very nice car. I like the looks much better than the 911.

One aside. As I was leaving the event a man and woman, I presume from the dealership that donated the car were walking beside me. They exchanged some words and then began to walk in separate directions, she towards the car and he towards the parking lot.

The woman then proceeded to walk right up to the Porsche. And, without breaking stride, she grabbed one corner of a magnetic sign stuck to the driver's door and casually dragged it off the paint as she kept walking towards the rear of the car. I was cringing. Should've gone over and bitch slapped her. But I kept walking as it wasn't my car and I had a 4.5 hour drive in front of me.

Good luck with the Porsche. That should make the commute tolerable.

What was the 0-60 time?
Did that IRS give you a lot of wheel hop off the line?
How about the 60 ft times?

Groucho,
You definately need to take your time and weigh out your options here.
If you think about it, for just twice as much, you could have a 1987 buick
GNX with only 9 miles on it!

It looks like that Geico gecko...however it's a very fast gecko.

Good luck with whatever you decide to trade your Monaro in for.

i'd have to agree you should have bid on that 87 most definitely. that porsche looks a tad bit slow. how easily can it be modified?

It really is an amazing car...but I need to drive the Z4 M-Coupe.

There's a $10,000 premium on the Porsche...and you can have Mr. Dinan perform quite a bit of his magic to the M for ten large.

Other than the typical Porsche owner snob appeal, I'm not sure why anyone would select a Cayman over the C6. The C6 is tons faster. The C6 handles and brakes as well and costs less and mods up for much less money. The C6 has a much more user friendly interior and gets better mileage than the S. The Cayman I drove also didn't ride very well, it had an active ride management system, so that might have contributed to it. I will concede the seats felt better and the steering felt telepathic, but that is about the only things I remember liking better than my C6. Oh I drove a manual Cayman S and the shifter and transmission make the Tremec in the GTO and C6 feel like it was designed to be a really good truck transmission.

Groucho, you owe it to yourself to drive a C6.
