reimbursed for shipping,.. out of line?

Not going to mention vendor.......

Lets say you order something, and it doesn’t fit your application. Catalog says it should fit, lists it as fitting….But it doesn’t…..
Vendor doesn’t have an alternative….. No custom parts – or possible variances.

This is a reproduction part that clearly is not manufactured to the same dimensions as the stock part.
Is it out of line to want to be able to return it and get a full refund – part plus all shipping?

Garage
Not out of line but probably common practice. I had to modify almost every aftermarket piece I bought.

Seriously doubt you are going to be reimbursed for shipping. Some repop sellers will take it back but charge a restock fee.

What was the part? If if it's for a '71 or '72, ive probably examined it before and noted the shortcomings.

This time It was the chrome trim that goes on the rear of the hood on my 72. It was about 1/4 inch to short. This was not the only thing I ordered from a very popular vendor that was advertised to my my vehicle that didn't.

I insisted on a return postage to send it back and be refunded the full amount.

my bet is if Ames was the seller, they will take care of you.
if the Parts Place...you're prob not going to be happy.

nice used stainless trim will be the option.

Ames was the seller. They were not to cooperative. I sent pictures of the part clearly not right, the "tech" even measured the same they had in stock and they were not long enough.

I really figured he would have just said, ok send it back and we will make it right. Not what happened.

I have purchased parts from many vendors over the years, Kirbin, Summit Racing, Jegs, Texas Speed, Rockauto, Ecklers, Corvette Central..etc etc This was not a pleasant experience over an inexpensive part.

I did manage to find an original the part on ebay and it fit correctly.

Agree, that's not right, Ames needs to step up, make it right, then note the issue in their online catelogue or drop the part.
Was there any kind of pkg noting who the original supplier was?

No vendor mentioned.....
HOWEVER...they did email me this: (Implying it wasn't meant to fit correctly)

Part# D107S
Description 1968-72 HOOD MOLDING, STAINLESS (RE)
Net Comments ** THESE ARE 1968-70 STYLE WHICH DO NOT WRAP AROUND THE EDGES OF THE HOOD BUT FIT THE SAME FOR 1971-72 MINUS WRAPPING AROUND THE EDGES LIKE THE ORIGINALS** THIS IS THE STAINLESS STEEL MOLDING THAT GOES AT THE BACK EDGE OF THE HOOD AT THE BASE OF THE WINDSHIELD. AMES RECOMMENDS USING STRIP CAULK OR EQUIVALENT TO HELP ADHERE THIS MOLDING TO THE HOOD. SOME MOLDINGS MAY NEED ADDITIONAL CRIMPING FOR A SNUG FIT.

BUT...... The description in my Catalog #34 states something totally different !!!!!!!!!!!!

D107S 1968-72 Hood Rear Molding Stainless Steel
This new reproduction fits much better than earlier products
Quality: Very Good

I have bought a lot of parts from different vendors. It looks like they have different information than you do. My recent catalog shows same as you. I have found that Ames never refund shipping unless it is their mistake . I would call this as theirs. They are slow on refunds as sometimes it takes weeks. I will also add that all or most of my GTO parts are bought from Ames and I'm very happy with 99.9 % of them. The best rtn policy by far is Summit . As I am sure you know it is best to be polite and treat each other with respect and most of the time customer wins . Best luck Doug

There really is no reason for a reproduction part not to fit properly. Regardless who the vendor is or who manufactured the part, they must have the facts, figures, dimensions, template, etc. to produce this part. Then before producing 1,000 of them, trial fit the first one for quality fit. Make adjustments if necessary. I know it's easy for me to say, but I never understood why this can be an issue. Is quality control really dead?? Hope not. Yes, Summit has the absolutely best return policy, followed very closely by Jegs. I always look there first to see what they might have, before going to a specialized vendor.
