Top of the Laguna Seca Corkscrew

Went down to Monterey for the Speed World Challenge GT race on Sunday. Unfortunately, Stu Hayner and his GTO team didn't make the trip.

What was cool is that the Max Papis (a CTS-V factory driver) won the race, Andy Pilgrim (a CTS-V factory driver) won the driver's championship and Cadillac came from behind on the last lap to snatch the manufacturer's championship from Porsche.

The best part was some guy and his wife in a new Porsche Turbo parked by our group on the inside of Turn 6 when the race was started. Our group said hello -- and they totally blew us off. Guess they thought their sh*t didn't stink or something. Anyway, they really got steamed when our group went nuts when the Cadillacs won.

Was able to get out onto the track for a little bit. Here's a shot going into the entry of the "Corkscrew" -- one of the best turns in all of racing:

Although I've never been there, that is by far one of the best, and my personal favorite, racetracks of all time! Good pics!

That's a hell of a pic, thanks for posting it! Reminds me of gran turismo 4.

At certain races, you can pay for escorted "Fan Laps." At this event, the fee was $25. Something like 50 people signed up to do it.

Things really worked out for us this time around. We got there really late -- so there was no room for us at the end of the line -- so they just stuck us near the front.

Turns out we were the fourth car to roll off. Our escort, a CHP on one of their BMW bikes, dropped all the back to the end of the field because so many people were coming out. While he was busy, I kind of putzed along until a huge gap opened up between us and the cars in front -- which allowed us clear sailing from Turn Six all the way back around to Turn 3.

Once we caught up with the rest of the guys at the front -- we had to follow them around for another lap and that was it. My Dad took the picture on the second lap.

Overall, thought the GTO handled pretty well -- but the track was awfully sandy -- and whatever rubber was put down wasn't even sticking -- so whenever you'd go through it -- the stuff would just come up.

I'll never forget Alex Zanardi passing Bryan Herta there.

Thanks for the pic. I have fond memories of that track. My dad took me there when I was very young to watch the Can-Am races in the mid to late 60s. When I was in college, I raced Formula Fords with the Jim Russell school at Laguna for a couple years. Then joined the Navy and haven't been back.

I'd love to get on it in the "new" configuration. Now that I'm stationed on the West Coast, I may actually have a chance to get down there for a race.
