Why Even Bother Washing My Car?

Had knee surgery a little while ago. Painful as heck -- but now I'm able to get around a little bit.

Checked the weather Saturday -- and so it's going to be really nice this week. Washed both of our cars. Felt great to be able to do something productive. And they really, really turned out nice.

Had to go visit the surgeon today. About a 20 minute drive. First traffic light. A gigantic blob of bird poop falls on the hood. Great. Get to the doctor's office. Close the door. Hit a gigantic blob of tar on the way over. Looks great on a yellow car. Grrr.

Heading back. On the freeway -- heading over a bridge. Big rig with a bunch of freshly crushed cars on it. This road is three lanes in each direction -- and this guy's in the middle one. As I go by, my car starts getting pummeled with oil from one of the cars.

Long story short -- my car looks like crap and I have to redo it again as soon as the sun goes down. Yippie.

I know the feeling. A couple weeks ago I got out and washed and waxed my GTO. A couple miles up the road from me, I don't know exactly what they're doing or why, but they've dug about 10 feet of topsoil off of about 3 acres of land and have been hauling it off in dump trucks, and they've tracked dirt and mud all over the road for a half mile in either direction. I forgot about this, and of course it had rained the night before, so I topped the hill and proceeded to run into mud absolutley everywhere on the road, and you couldn't go around it. My freshly washed and waxed car looked like I had been 4-wheeling out in the swamp somewhere.

I feel your pain on both counts--the knee and the dirty car.

Had reconstructive knee surgery about 20 years ago--ACL, MCL, meniscus, blah blah blah. Hurt like a sonofagun. Someone once told me there's not a heckuva lot you can go through that hurts more than knee surgery. To test that notion, I asked a female co-worker who'd gone through both childbirth and knee surgery which was worse. Far and away the knee surgery, she said.

So I wish you well, my friend. The pain will fade, your range of motion will come back and you'll be better off. You have an automatic, right? Be grateful (unless it was your right knee, of course, in which case the clutch is irrelevant).

Regarding the post-wash dirtying of your car, that sucks. The good part is that you can wash your car again. Be grateful that truck wasn't hauling gravel or something damaging. I've had to do a lot of freeway driving this week, which I hate, and I keep hearing crap pinging off my car. I just know that when I wash it this weekend, I'll have nicks to touch up. Grrr.
