Auto Shifter

Hello,
This is probably a stupid question but how do you get the chrome shifter knob/ball off of the auto shifter on a 65 GTO? Does it unscrew or ? I can't get mine to move so I figure there must be another way. Any help is appreciated.

See if it has a Snap Ring/Retainer Ring on the underside. That's what my 69 has.

If it's anything like the '66 the threads can get worn making it seemingly just spin.
Once you have the release button unscrewed, gently apply some upward pull while unscrewing the ball.
This sometime helps get the threads to catch.
