The 389 became a 400 when it was overbored .060". A money-saver is to use std. 400 pistons in a "sixty-over" 389 block . So, you COULD have a '65 "400"........it just didn't come that way. My '65 has a 394, and my '67 has a 406!! The above post is correct, though.......400's made their entrance in the 1967 model year. The main improvement was the new cylinder head design.
