You are definitely right, I have been watching Youtube and getting this engine running won't be that difficult. I think I am going to get it running with a temporary gas tank and then worry about the gas tank once its running well.

Very easy to get the engine fired up if you just want to hear it run. Do make sure you prime the oil system as if it was a new engine because if it has sat for some time, the bearings and other parts could be a little dry on oil, so no need to take any chances and do damage that could have been avoided.

PJ is right on with that , Ames sells the priming rod. Use a 1/2 inch heavy duty drill run it counter clockwise. With valve covers off you will see oil flowing

Funny that you say that I was just in harbor freight buying a 1/2” drill from a post I read earlier about priming and all I had was 3/8 and you were in that post! Lol

GAS TANK? What, do you live in Beverly Hills?

You don't even need a carburetor. Squirt some gas in the intake, run 12v to the coil, and hook some jumper cables up to the starter.

If you make it past that stage, then worry about your fancy gas tank and fuel lines. Gee whiz, no wonder youre not done yet!

And for legal purposes, I'm bound to state for the record that if you light yourself on fire, you better get the engine running in the process. Don't come back here all blown up and tell us that it didnt work.

Of course... for another few hours worth of work, you COULD hook up fuel lines, a gas tank, and starter wires... but you'll basically be setting hot rodding back 100 years

I take offensive with that. Since I already use that setup if he does that too will we back to the 1820s. Sorry I did the math in my head.

Yes, cancel that auction now! My lifelong friend with the 72 has officially joined the forum and should be posting pictures as well as answering your questions soon! You may need to be patient. He's one of those guys who seems to stay busy with three or four full time jobs at the same time.

No, that's the guy, one of my lifelong friends and GTO brothers! maxmad 72

I think we probably watched Mad Max and the Road Warrior a few too many times when we were younger.

Hey all! I just joined the forum after being prodded by my lifetime friends and fellow GTO owners, Mike F. and Jeff B.! I am excited to be here, and I have a good story for you: So I bought this GTO in El Paso in 1984 when I was just 15...that's right I have had it for almost 40 years. It...

It looks like slingshot here on the forum has a 71 as well. Maybe ask him for some photos too?
