OK race fans, it's time for the season to begin. Most of the Pro cars and quite a few Sportsman class cars are gathering up at Pomona, to kick off the NHRA national event schedule, with the Winternationals. On the pre-entry lists, I can see 6 Stockers and 4 Super Stockers, with Pontiac power !

Good luck to all racers, with Pontiac Power ! :)

Interesting to see the '72 HO Formula in D/SA. Wonder, if NHRA refactored the '72 HO engine. Over the years, E/SA has typically been the quickest NHRA stock class one would see a '71 or '72 lightweight HO car, quite a few others have run in F/S and G/S. Awesome performance, no matter what from a well scienced out combo. Hats off to the Burton's!

"...engine compartment pic: Scott Burton '72 HO Formula Stocker..."

May just be a typo--Brad has the '72--Scott has the '70 RAIV. :)

Below is an older pic of Scott's engine. Don't know how it looks now ?

"...Wonder, if NHRA refactored the '72 HO engine..."

According the Class Racer Info site, it's factored at 340hp.

http://classracerinfo.com/EngineSpecs.aspx?ENGINE=2070&MAKE=Pontiac

And they'll let you add or remove weight, to run either the car's natural class, or a class above, or a class below.
I think they sometimes pic the class which they think will have the fewest quicker cars in it, at a particular race, since same class runs are heads-up, no breakout.

Yep, mixed up father and son's names.

amazing attention to drivetrain and chassis detail. would love to spend a few days getting the close up on the transmission build and converter. Lot of ET has been knocked off in that respect over the years.

Consider the following...
Pontiac E Stockers in the early- mid 70's were running mid to low 12's. I got to go over the ex Truman Fields '72 HO GTO stocker very well, two summers ago. As run as an NHRA stocker, very close to 10-1 C/R, no porting, NHRA cheater cam, stock intake, open headers, 4.33-4.56 gearing, 4000+ rpm stall converter, relatively tall 15" slicks. Today, competitive E stocker...high 10's-low 11's.

Today's quickest Pontiac Pure Stock Drag equivalents
(will factor as E/SA or F/SA, at best, if using the NHRA formulas).
Set up right, Pure Stock legal 455 HO (no porting, optimized 068 cam, no more than .421 lift) 2200 rpm max stall, 3.73 gearing, G70-14's on 6" wide wheels, full 2.5" exhaust through untouched 2.25 round port manifolds... low low 12's, with a high 11, just the right car and right air, coming very soon.

Yeah, those times, on small hard tires, are absolutely AMAZING !!! :)

But after doing a lot of digging, I finally figured out why today's NHRA Stockers are running 2 seconds quicker.

Forged rods and pistons, plus trick ring combinations, aftermarket block if needed, unlimited cam duration and valve spring pressure(which requires special high cost lifters), any GM rear end, Cal-Trac type traction devices, lighter trans (like the trick TH200 or light TH350 with 2.75 1st gear), better converters, better slicks, stickier tracks, and some REALLY trick (but considered legal) engine building (by builders such as Parsons & Myers, and Heads-Up).

Tommy Brown & Brad Burton are still alive after round 2, of Stock. :)

POMONA 1 - Stock Eliminator Round 2 Eliminations

After 2 rounds of SS, there are no Pontiac Super Stockers still in the hunt. :(

POMONA 1 - Super Stock Round 2 Eliminations

So, that leaves the 2 Stockers, to represent Pontiac Power, at Pomona, on Saturday. But, many years ago, we proved that it only takes 1 Pontiac, to win the race. Hey, there are twice that many, still in, at Pomona. Good luck guys ! :)

Arizona

The big NHRA show moves to Arizona this week. There look to be at least 6 Pontiac powered Stockers and 3 Super Stockers.

The 1st round of Stock qualifying is in the books. Randi Lyn Shipp topped the list of Pontiac powered cars. 5 Pontiacs made the top 20.

PHOENIX - Stock Eliminator Qualifying, Session #1 Order

Leo Glasbrenner's GT 4th gen tops the list of Pontiac Super stock cars, @ #26.

PHOENIX - Super Stock Qualifying, Session #1 Order

Wow ! Leo just moved up to #3 on the Stocker list, with a 1.141 under run of 10.259, in C/SA, with his '68 Bird. :)

Hope that don't get a hp factor increase from NHRA. :(

E-1

Well, the Pontiac Stockers are off to a good start this morning. All 6 survived the 1st round of elims. :)

PHOENIX - Stock Eliminator Round 1 Eliminations

But, in order to race on Sunday, they'll have to win 3 rounds today. Not an easy task, given the level of competition.

PHOENIX - Saturday Schedule

Brad Burton survived round 1 of SS, with his 3rd gen GT Bird. :)

PHOENIX - Super Stock Round 1 Eliminations

4 Pontiac Stockers survived round 2 of elims. :)

PHOENIX - Stock Eliminator Round 2 Eliminations

Brad is still alive in SS, after round 2. :)

PHOENIX - Super Stock Round 2 Eliminations

Randi Lyn, Brad , and Leo will get to race their Stockers, on Sunday ! :)

PHOENIX - Stock Eliminator Round 3 Eliminations

But Brad won't get to race his Super Stocker, Sunday--good run--but not good enuff. :(

Div 4 Race

Looks like we had 3 Pontiacs show up, in Houston, for the div 4 race. Adam Davis came over, from Alabama, to join with the '74 Birds of Hunter Pierdolla and J.B. Clegg. Hunter qualified #18, in an 80 car field, with a .991 under run of 11.159.

LODRS 4-1 - Stock Eliminator Qualifying, Saturday Final Order

In SS, J.B. Clegg qualified with a blast of 9.739, running SS/I, in the old H-O Racing Specialties '74 Bird. :)

LODRS 4-1 - Super Stock Qualifying, Saturday Final Order

Both Pontiac Stockers survived round 1 of elims. Adam Davis cut a .009 light and ran 10.978 on a 10.97 dial. That package is hard to beat, at most races. But not many racers can maintain those kind of numbers enuff rounds to win a race.

Arizona Sunday Elims

Well, in Ariz, Randi Lyn & Leo move on to the next round. So, 2 Pontiacs are still alive. :) But, unfortunately, we won't have an all Pontiac final, cause they have to run each other in the next round. :(
Leo qualified a lot quicker. So he should have the advantage, in the heads-up C/SA semi-final. At least we are sure to have a Pontiac powered Bird in the finals, at this national event. :)

PHOENIX - Stock Eliminator Round 4 Eliminations

OK, Randi Lyn is in the finals. She cut her best light of elims. Leo let off or broke--don't know which.

PHOENIX - Stock Eliminator Round 5 Eliminations

All Right ! Randi Lyn picked up another Wally !!! :)

Div 7 Race

There are quite a few Pontiac Stockers, entered in the div 7 race this weekend, in Arizona, including some that were there last weekend, plus Larry Maxwell, John Schloe, & Ryan Schloe. Lindy Lindholm was the highest Pontiac qualifier on Fri, at # 5, followed by Brad Burton, at #7.

LODRS 7-1 - Stock Eliminator Qualifying, Friday Order

Also looks to be 3 SS Pontiacs entered. Don Kennedy is qualified in the #2 position, with his GT/AA Sunfire.

LODRS 7-1 - Super Stock Qualifying, Friday Order

Good luck to all the Pontiac powered racers this weekend ! :)

Great news !!!

Got some BIG racing news this week ! At the national event in Vegas, it was an all Pontiac final, in Stock ! :grin2:

Yeah, it was a great race for the Pontiac faithful--3 class wins + the all Pontiac final ! A 1st gen and a 2nd gen were the only 2 Stockers left standing. The 1st gen won the race--Leo Glasbrenner driving.

LAS VEGAS 1 - Stock Eliminator Final, Round 7 Eliminations

Great job guys ! :smile3:
