Never heard of this one before. 5 two barrel carbs. I'd love to play with this.

My guess is that it was an original 2 Bbl intake and someone welded on the additional 2-Bbl flanges. These could be purchased and then welded to a cast iron intake. I have seen these advertised for use on the 6-cyl intake manifolds which had the single 2-Bbl and then you welded on the 2 Bbl flanges - one for the front 2 cylinders and one for the back 2 cylinders to give you a 2x3 set-up on your 6-cyl manifold. It was an optional way of getting the 2x3 without having to purchase an aftermarket 2x3 intake OR if there was no available aftermarket 2x3 intakes for your particular engine.

It operated like a tri-power. The center carburetor was the only one with idle circuits. I never heard of anyone running one, so I have no idea how well they worked. Multiple carburetors were not that uncommon in the late 50's-early 60's as high flow carbs were not available. A good friend of mine had a 6 Stromberg setup on his '49 Olds.
