Hey folks! I have lurked and lingered for quite awhile now. Just recently purchased a 66 Tempest from a family member. Its been in the family non-working for about 10 years. I have the $$$ and the time for it. It is staying a Tempest, and currently has a 70 Firebird 400 motor/trans.

My current dilemma is that i'm torn on the wheels/tires, i have searched through this forum trying to gauge how to address it. Any recommendations or thoughts are greatly appreciated.

My thoughts are Front: 225/50R17 Rear: 245/50R17, but im worried about losing the current stance as you see from my sideways picture the car does have the wagon springs in the back, as well screwing up the speedometer reading, or even more dreading the skyjacker look. My findings on the internet the article in HRM recommends "15- to 18-inch: All rim diameters use 8-inch-wide wheels with 4-1/2-inch backspacing. Use tires with a 245 section width and aspect rations as follows: 15-inch, 60; 16-inch, 50; 17-inch, 40; and 18-inch, 35." 40's just do not sound right to me or will look right in my head. I don't want to rub or go "hip-hop".

Welcome to the forum. There are some trade offs when going from the 14 inch rim your Tempest came from the factory wearing and going up to a 17. To keep the speedometer close to accurate you will have to go with a relatively short side wall, or go with fairly large tires and deal with speedometer issues. You could compromise and go with a 16 and stay closer to the original look and still get the benefit of larger wheel,/shorter side wall. There was a recent post that had a ton of pictures of the 16-72 with 17 inch rims. Shorter side wall for sure but not near a hip-hop look (just stay away from 22's and you'll be good).

Hey welcome here. First dont worry about the stance because that will change very fast. I have 17's all around and ended up adding coil overs in the front. Adjustable shocks in the back. Etc, etc, etc. 17's is the highest I will go. Let me get my numbers so that I can share those with you.

Thanks for the help Jared, i actually searched and found the exact thread you mentioned. Found a Lemans with the setup I was thinking about. I think i will look back into doing 16's again.

Agreed those are cool
And have a vintage vibe to them.
That's what i am trying to pull off. When i found them, they really reminded me of a updated 70's firebird or GTO wheel. I really like the Rally II's as well, but just wanted something a little different.
