Hello....I am brand new to this Forum. I have been searching for some time now for a 1968 Red GTO Coupe automatic trans with a vinyl top and without the hideaway headlights. My dad had a brand new one when I was a kid and I would like one just like it. My question is, is there anything in the VIN that tells me that the car came with the Vinyl top? I know a build sheet would probably have the information but not everyone shows or has one when selling. I know many people do not replace the vinyl when restoring a coupe since water would get underneath and cause rust. I have found many without the vinyl but not with. At least in the configuration I described.
Thanks.......Dennis

No, the VIN would not tell whether or not the car had a vinyl top. However the cowl tag on the firewall (near the master brake cylinder) wold tell you that info as ell as others such as body color.

Here is the site for the cowl tag decoding:

Welcome to DataTagDecoder.Com | DataTagDecoder.Com

and this search gives you more specific info to your question:

Best of luck with your GTO hunt (and Welcome to the Forum).
