I completely restored\moded a 71 convertible Corvette and then got a wild hair and sold it. Long story short I am looking for a muscle car to fix up. I have inquired about a 68 near Clover SC that has a 400 CI and 4speed. The description says that it is a project and for $2000 I am betting it is. I guess in this post I am asking multiple questions.

1. What dangers do I need to look out for when inspecting the car. Mechanical stuff is not a problem. I am more concerned about rust prone areas.

2. What is the difference in 68 and 69's?

3. Can a 68 be made to be a 69?

4. Was a judge made in 68 and what would it take to clone one?

I am sure I will have more questions but this is it for now.

Welcome to the Forum! I am also a Chevy guy, see my avatar for a pic of my stable including my '74 Corvette resto-mod, which I still have along with my '68 GTO which I just picked up in Feb.
As a relatively new guy I can't answer all your questions, but I'll take a stab. I'm sure one of the more experienced guys will jump in shortly.
1. Rust around the back window and rear window panel is common, as always check rear quarters and lower front fenders behind the wheel opening. If it has/had a vinyl top check underneath, around the window trim, and at the lower trim at the top of the quarter. If any of these are rusty or leaking check the floor pans. Lot's of repair sheetmetal available but as you can guess you can easily spend more than the value of the car fixing rust if you get in too deep.
2. rear taillights/bumper, front signals and side markers, slight grill differences, I think the hood scoops may be a little different but not sure. Some small differences in the dash I think. I wanted a '68 in particular so I didn't study the '69s much.
3. I'm sure this is possible, not sure if it's worth the effort, although judging from your next question I think I see where you're going with this question. (Judge Clone)
4. The Judge was not made in '68.
Best of luck, but I would be careful about buying a $2K muscle car, could be a real steal but could also be a real dog that someone is just trying to unload.

Thanks Jeff!!! Yeah 2k isn't a lot but with my current budget I have to be thrifty or cheap... ;-) If in looking at the car I feel it is more than I can try and fix myself then I will definately walk away. Fieberglass was a lot easier to work with on a Vette than sheet metal on a metal car but it is always something to learn.

2. What is the difference in 68 and 69's? Interiors were completely different. Ign in the column on a '69, different upholstery, steering wheel, dash. '68 had wing windows, hoods were the same. Plus what Jeff said.

3. Can a 68 be made to be a 69? Sure, but why go thru the expense, buy a '69.

4. Was a judge made in 68 and what would it take to clone one?No. I have seen a '68 cloned to a Judge. Add a wing, stickers, paint the hood scoops black, rally II's w/out the trim rings and paint it orange. I didn't like it, but it wasn't my car. Clone a '69 if that's the route you want to go.

I am sure I will have more questions but this is it for now.
