BORN TO RUN

As I've often mentioned, one of the few benefits to living in New Jersey, is easy access to some of the worlds most famous "cruise circuits/ strips".

The state is only 45 minutes wide, and our entire East Coast, is one long "cruise strip", of boardwalk amusements and beaches, made famous by Bruce Springsteen and Asbury Park, in the song Born to Run.

I grew up there, and I still spend as much time as possible there with my GTO... One Sunday morning, I pulled into town at the perfect moment, which was caught by local hot rod photographer, Bill Scannell, and used for the opening shot in his Born to Run video.

He was nice enough to put the video up so that I could share it here. If you're a hot rod fan, please check out Bill's work on his youtube channel!

These stories and pictures make me want to trailer my car down to NJ for a weekend.
Trailer? Put a reasonable rear gear in it and DRIVE it! I've put 130,000 miles on my '67 (not modified) and have taken it all over the place. The trip is MOST of the fun!!

I have 3.23s in the rear but it's still terrible on gas. I can't go any lower with the cam profile I'm running. With the miles I am able to put on it per year, fuel mileage wasn't a concern so I went a bit crazy with the engine build. I don't regret my decision but a road trip would be a bit much. I put somewhere around 1300 miles on it last summer which was the most miles I've put on it since the first year.

It's funny - my wife really wants to take mine to Hot August Nights - i sure as hell ain't driving to Reno from Seattle area - not on 3.90 gears. But even with 3.08 or some highway gear - a convertible on interstates for hours is just crap and taking 2 lanes the whole way is out of question - let alone to get out to Jersey and take Army up on the offer. It will have to be trailer if I ever get to Hot August Nights. And how the hell do I protect the paint? buy that wrap I've seen advertised? I still have two teenagers at home and a job i need to support fam. sigh. Maybe in retirement? 10 yrs from now?

Excellent vid & neat story. We've got a PNW 'Seaside' (Oregon) and a 'Long Beach' (Wa) which is home of the "Rod Run to The End of The World". Finally made it there in 2022 with the Red Barchetta (aka Goatly). Too bad there aren't many cruise events around our nice weather days (plenty of "park-and-sit" events - just want to mix it up through the summer).

I grew up in highland park so tues nights at e-town happened a lot when I was in hs (‘86) going w my buddy and watching his dad race his Shelby gt500.
Lived in Belmar (worked at DJais for 23yrs) and settled in Point Pleasant. Living at a vacation destination is pretty awesome.

If you want to see Tom Daniel's Real Red Baron you need to take a trip to the Museum of American Speed.
This should be on every car guy's bucket list. You can also see one of the OHC 6's we donated to the museum in 2013 along with way too much to take in.

Here's a nice walk-through video;

Still, have my Hot Wheels(y):)

When I started going to the Asbury cruises, this car instantly became my favorite! Hemmings just did a nice write up on it, but pictures dont do it justice!
