My spare key is completely dead and the key I use now only works right next to the door. I know that the key is soldered together and it is very expensive to get a new key and have it reprogrammed. So what is my best option?

The key fob case is glued together and the battery is soldered to the PC board inside. It is possible to slice a battery and carefully solder it in but it is easier to buy a new (must be new) fob and program it yourself. I got mine off eBay for about $50. I believe the self program can only be done if you have a working fob. I can dig up the instructions or you can search for them; it is along the lines of turning the ignition on, waiting approx 15 minutes for it to chirp, turn off then on, and repeat three times.

If you are adept enough or know someone who is adept enough to take the fob apart and remove the battery and solder a new one in you could then put the circuit board and battery in the replacement case in the link below using your present key blade. These come apart easily and are held together with screws rather than glue for easier future disassembly. And they're only 10 bucks.
