Well, (with my help) the wife traded the Liberty in on a Mazda 3s 5 door.

What a sweet car. We qualified for supplier price so it was a little less than $17K, but the interior and build quality is right up there with much more expensive cars. She got the 5M and that shifter is as slick as any I've driven.

She had been fretting over gas the past year, and the only time the Jeep was off road was when she accidentally pulled the e-brake and put it in a ditch this past winter! The 3 gets double the gas mileage, and at least to me is a lot more fun to drive.

I'll talk about the buying experience in another thread.

My Dakota has the same 3.7L the Liberty has. It's an ok engine, but the fuel mileage is lousy, so I know what you mean. I've been thinking about a small wagon and the 3 has been on the short list. I occassionally tow, but it's only 1500-2000 lbs and I tow for less than 5 miles. That and not sure if I could fit everything into the back of a small wagon that I need to carry from time to time.

Nice car, keep me updated on it and what you think of it.

Cool. What did you think of the Mazda 5?
I was eyeballing the 5 (they had one outside the sales windows) while we were doing the paperwork on the 3.

Nice looking vehicle, and the epa mileage estimates weren't too bad either. If we needed the size, that would definitely be an option.

Funny, but everybody I know with a jeep gets about 17-18 mpg. Doesn't seem to matter what model, V8 or V6. 17-18 mpg.

If we did off-roading the Jeep would have been a keeper. Just didn't make sense for my wife; she is either by herself or carpooling 2 others, and the 3 is perfect. 160 HP so it goes over the mountain in 5th gear just fine with the AC on, but great mileage without going the route of a hybrid.

So far (250 miles) we're both happy with it. I drove it today. One smooooooth little car. Unfortunately, I drove the Goat yesterday, so it suffers in comparison power wise but still, it's a peppy little 4 cylinder.

It's on CR's best pick list, if that means anything.

The thing I do like about it vs. the Vibe is the power is linear. The Vibe's tuning on kicks in the real power at about 6K rpm, and at that point you can't hardly hear the radio for the engine noise. Still, I think they're good cars as well, just a little different animal.
