Hi members, I have recently started work on my next project which was a genuine tripowered 389 4 speed gto. It came to me mostly complete but missing the motor, box and various important parts. My vision for the project is to convert it to rhd and do an ls conversion. The longer I have to think about it the more I wonder is this car too rare or valuable to go and cut up the dash and firewall? I have little to no access to the factory parts here in Australia hence why the ls option. Any input would be much appreciated.

Seems like a waste of money and a good way to destroy a Pontiac, but to each his own....Given that you don't have many of the original bits, are you sure it was a REAL GTO? Are LHD not an option in Australia? If they are, I think keeping it LHD and sticking with true Pontiac bits would be the way to go IMHO. You can find a period correct engine in the US, have it built, and sent down to you.

I think it wouldn't be worth the effort to do so if you don't have to by law.
But it is your car!

IIRC all Ausi Pontiacs were imported/converted for sale as RHD, so a LHD would be unusual.

Many years ago we had an honorary member from your side in our club that had a good looking RHD '64.

I guess my real concern is what is a gto project worth. My plans for the project wont change but i cant help but think i should be doing this to a tempest not a gto. Im 99% sure its genuine between the vin and firewall plate and accompanying paperwork

I would not doing anything other than a back to original rebuild, or as close as you can afford. Many people would love to have such a nice start for a rebuild. I suggest you do not do anything that could not be easily taken back to original.

If i leave it lhd it will all be fully reversable.
The power steering rack i bought can be set up lhd or rhd. Food for thought
That is a nice resto mod, but you apparently have a tri-power four speed 64 GTO! I wish I had a tempest to give you so you would not change the GTO. If you were in the states, I'd be asking to buy the 64 so you could find a different frame and body to start with.:frown3:

Don't change it. It will devalue it greatly. As I understand, cars over 25 years old in OZ don't need to be changed to RHD anyway. Keep it as-is, or sell it and chop up a lesser car. JMHO.....GTO owner/driver since the 1970's.

If only the value you speak of translated here in oz. I paid the same for the gto project as i would have for a Holden that they made 250000 of. Maybe i should restore it and ship it to the us for a road trip then sell it ?

Obviously opinions vary but mine is that old cars are more fun if you drive them and it's hard to put a monetary value on that. If converting it to RHD means you'll drive it more I'd do it. If your goal is to build it and flip it keep it original.

I spent a lot of time and money installing things like a modern sound system, 700R4 trans and fuel injection on my 68 Convertible and probably devalued it in the process but I have no intention of selling it and I drive it often if not daily.

I always build cars to keep but something always seems to come up that triggers me to sell whether it be the itch to start something new or necessity. Yes rhd and the ls conversion would not only get it done sooner and would mean i would drive it more. I always said i would never sell my last project so now i find myself considering resale with every project. Maybe the gto will be the exception
