no company is perfect. it comes down to what the recall is for, is the defect life threatening (toyotas latest) or inconvenient (GM's latest) and whether they only recall if they get caught.

True.

I'm surprised Toyota didn't learn from Fords mistake with the Pinto. Your going to get caught one way or another.

I heard Ford was recalling all of their cars for being lame. :p
If you had to recall cars for being lame Toyota wouldn't be in business.

Some manufacturers have a flavor to their cars. Others build cars to attract a niche market.

The only thing you can say about a Toyota is that it has great quality. There is no other reason to buy a boring ugly car. Now that they are recalling for safety isues and they are also being hit with quality issues (Avalon oil leaks being the latest in a short string since 2006) will people keep buying a boring, ugly, unsafe poor quality vehicle????

Toyota's woes continues however the news that came out stating Toyota kept a log of "WINS" against the U.S. Feds I believe pi$$ed the FEDS off more than the defects itself. Apparently they negotiated deals that resulted in reduced fines and lenient dealings with our FED, they logged this and classified them as "wins."

While our FEDS showed compassion to Toyota and turned the proverbial cheek that is now surfacing with safety defects resulting in death and injuries, Toyota was boasting they "WON" battles with our FEDS all in the name of $$$$. So while Toyota is on the hot seat, no one in congress is pointing fingers at themselves for NOT being tougher on Toyota. They have egg on their face as well as Toyota. Our Congress and those who allowed Toyota to skate share in the blame for death and injuries. Of course they are above all this and like everything else they do, they administer their god like credence to others and forget they themselves are guilty too.

Toyota, is falling toward the quanty vs quality you can't have both. Can't knock them for that, because they had the impression on people that they were good cars(they was too) people are buying them left and right. Well in order to keep up with demand you have to skemp out somewere.

Most Asian cars are really, really good cars, I drove the wheels off my 04 Mitsu Lancer it was in three accedents and took it like a champ, not a seep of oil nothing.

So far just US and nihonjin cars are being hit. Are the germans too standoffish to be part of the recall craze?

My uncle's 2010 Audi A3 has had two recalls that I know of. One was something to do with the fuel tank vent valve and the other had to do with the transmission harness connector. I remember discussing that over Thanksgiving dinner last year.

THE CLOSING FORCE OF AN INTERNAL SPRING OF THE FUEL TANK VENTILATION VALVE IS NOT ADEQUATE ENOUGH TO HOLD THE VALVE CLOSED UNDER EXTREME DRIVING CONDITIONS POSSIBLY ALLOWING FUEL TO LEAK.

Consequence:
IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, A VEHICLE FIRE COULD OCCUR.

Remedy:
VOLKSWAGEN WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND AUDI DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL TANK VENTILATION VALVE WITH AN IMPROVED VALVE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 16, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AUDI AT 1-800-253-2834.

Recall Date:
AUG 20, 2009

Model Affected:
2010 AUDI A3

Summary:
VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 AND 2010 PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 2008 AND AUGUST 2009. THE WIRING HARNESS OF A TEMPERATURE SENSOR IN THE DIRECT SHIFT GEARBOX (DSG) MAY HAVE CONNECTOR WIRES THAT WERE INSUFFICIENTLY CRIMPED. WITH INSUFFICIENTLY CRIMPED CONNECTOR WIRES, A TEMPERATURE SENSOR HAS THE POTENTIAL TO FALSELY DETECT A HIGH GEARBOX OIL TEMPERATURE, CAUSING THE TRANSMISSION TO ABRUPTLY SHIFT TO NEUTRAL. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE SELECTOR LEVER POSITION INDICATOR WITHIN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WILL FLASH. IN ADDITION, THE "DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL" INDICATOR LIGHT WILL BE ILLUMINATED, ALERTING THE DRIVER TO APPLY THE BRAKES.

Consequence:
THE ABRUPT SHIFT TO NEUTRAL COULD LEAD TO A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.

Remedy:
VOLKSWAGEN WILL REPROGRAM THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE WITH UPDATED SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 20, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987.
