Muncie shift linkage and speedo cable help

3854 Views 11 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  ftiliws
I put an M20 in my 71' Lemans, with a driver side speedo cable. The cable interferes with the 1st/2nd gear shift linkage preventing it from going into 1st. There must be linkages shaped to address this issue, can I just swap out the linkage?

Should'nt be an issue if you're using all factory stuff. Are you sure you have the shift arms installed properly? Post up a picture so we can see what you are dealing with.

I'll get that pic up soon. It's a manual conversion, eBay bought M20. The clip to the 1st/2nd shift fork is on the outside of the arm, while the 3/4th faces inward and clips facing the tranny.

Here are some pics. You can see the cable how it rest on the 1/2 link and would run into the bend in the link. You can also see the way the linkages face when clipped in place

Did you get this resolved? I have the same issue on the 65 that I bought a couple years back...can't get it into reverse. I haven't done the research to figure out which of the linkage or tranny isn't original.

Some Muncie's have speedometer cable on passenger side of tranny ! Have seen several on passenger side....probably for this very reason.

Pontiac - driver side, Chevy - Passenger side

Here's a photo of my original '67 M20 Muncie that's now out of the car. The 3-4 shift lever was bumped in storage but it would normally be straight up and down like the 1-2 lever.

Pics are below. I think the tranny's a Saginaw based on the 6261884 casting number on the tail. The body's casting is 8923(or 5...can't tell)856 which I can't find anything on.

i ran into something similar on a super t 10. this is what i did. i got a piece of all thread and bent it into the shape i needed, then when i got it right i used it for a pattern and made one from steel. i used a die to thread the end for the adjuster and heated where i needed to bend it. until i got it to match the all thread.

oh, i tacked a washer on the other end to the lever side to get the fit right also.it will keep it from sliding in too far. you could modify the rods you have too.

Thanks...so modifying the linkage is the way to go. That's what I figured!
