0171953 is stamped above YS. what do those numbers mean? thanks for any info. New to site, just bought 1969 GTO.

Should be the engine unit number. Do you have the PHS docs? If the nbr on the docs matches the nbr on the block, then you would have part of the "numbers matching" scenario.

unfortunately, the invoice copy provided by PHS will not include the Assembly Number aka engine unit number. From some Pontiac assembly plants plants for '67 models, a partial Asm Number is indicated. Similar deal in early '68. After that, this number never makes it onto an invoice. '69 400-2bbl optioned GTO's are an odd case, the economy engine doesnt always show up as an option on the invoice. The 400 2bbl was only avail with its own specific two letter ID code Turbo 400 & typically have a very high ratio rearend gear...2.78's.
