At least you can use the same size wrench on the skid plate and the drain plug. Makes it a little easier.

Removing the skid plate will reveal possibly the world's easiest car to change the oil on.

Oh, and I wouldn't leave it off - heaven forbid you get a decent rock kicked up or something, better to dent the skid plate than rip the oil filter off or bust the oil pan.
