So in the Chicagoland GTO club, one of the members posed the question if the 04 GTO is faster than the 66 tri-power. Stock for stock.

I thought I read someplace, Pontiac themselves maybe? that the 04 was the fastest GTO they've ever made, bar none.

So waddaya think? We have some classic GTO owners here, maybe they've been in both?

It goes without saying that the '68 goat's engine output was a gross horsepower measurement - not an SAE net measurement. In reality, the old goat put out about 280-290 horsepower compared to 350 for the new goat. Transmission and rear-end gear ratios, tire technology, brake technology and aerodynamics may help explain the rest of the performance differences between the two.

I am surprised the new GTO is heavier than the 68, seems like a much smaller car.

A lot of the stuff we now take for granted on modern cars (airbags, ABS, power steering & brakes, A/C, etc.) adds quite a bit of weight. Not as much of a surprise as you might think. :)

I can vouch for this quote. My 04 is faster than my 68. But it is a different type of speed. The old car is unrefined, brutal torque whereas the new car is mundained and sophiticated. I still love the old one better though. Nothing can match the sound of an old Poncho engine loping with a 4-speed right behind it.
