Three Killed in NJ Plane Crash

OLD BRIDGE, N.J. (AP) -- A small plane crashed near the Old Bridge Airport on Sunday night, killing three people and injuring two others.

The victims' names were not immediately released, pending notification of relatives, and details on the injured were not disclosed.

The twin-engine Piper went down around 10:50 p.m. near the Raceway Park speedway and burst into flames upon impact, but firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire. One person was flown by medical helicopter to a nearby hospital, while the others were taken there by ambulances, said Steven Jones, a state police spokesman.

The plane's wings were apparently sheared off by the trees before it hit the ground, police Lt. Robert Weiss told The Star-Ledger of Newark. He said at least two teenagers were found alive at the scene and taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

Authorities said emergency services personnel found some of the victims in the plane, while others had been ejected.

The crash occurred in an area off Pension Road, a few thousand feet away from a residential area, but did not damage any property. Some roads near the crash site were closed for several hours while police investigated the accident, but no major traffic problems were reported.

It was not clear if the plane was trying to land at the airport at the time of the crash, Old Bridge police Sgt. George Stader said, adding that the cause of the crash had not been determined. Witnesses said the plane had circled the airport prior to the crash, and authorities said the plane was based at the airport.

Federal Aviation Administration officials could not be reached for comment Sunday night. And further details about the plane, including its owner and where it was headed, were not immediately available early Monday.

Last summer, a corporate jet overshot the runway while trying to land at Old Bridge Airport. No one was injured in the Aug. 17 accident and the jet, carrying three people, came to rest in a grassy area near the runway.

First thing I thought of was the huge number of big trees around there. The whole area's pretty well forested. Not good when you're losing altitude.
