was ther a 455 availabe in that year for the Grand Prix? I know this is a 64 -74 forum but am sure one of you knows the answer-:)

No, the 455 was not available in that car.
The last year of production availability for the 455 was 1976.

As far as I know, the only V8 engines available in the 78 Grand Prix were either the 301 Pontiac or the 305 Chev (California only).

76 was the last year for the 455, The 77 GP used a 301, 350 and the 400. In 78 (4th generation) the GP was downsized and the Buick-built 231 CID V6 was the standard engine, the 301 was offered in 2bbl and 4bbl and the Chevy 305 was used in California to meet CAFE mandates.
