Any tricks to removing the butyl around the windshield. I want to clean this up, do some painting, replace the clips and reinstall the windshield. But this butyl is crazy sticky. I have the bulk of it out with a putty knife but wondering how to remove the rest. Paint thinner, acetone, heat, etc.. I welcome any tips.

Thankfully the shell was very solid with just a couple tiny pin holes. butyl2.jpg butyl1.jpg

I have wire wheeled that stuff off in the past. I suggest a smaller, finer wire wheel at lower speeds. It tends to heat up at higher speeds, get gummy and throw all over, but the debris can be worked off with some mineral spirits. The best luck I have had is doing it in the winter in a cold shop, but we're past that time now.

I prefer to use a 1" putty knife ( or similar) and a little heat to get as much off as possible then wire it off.
In some cases, if there is rust under it, it will pull right up/off.

Thanks. I have pretty much completed the putty knife part. I will try some heat and wire wheel combos.
