My siblings and I are trying to find out what happened to my Dad's '64 tripower GTO, but we do not have the VIN number, we have tried everything that we can think of other than going directly to our Dad, as we potential want to surprise him with our results (if they are good). we have tried searching through insurance records, DMV, GM/Pontiac directly, online VIN number decoders, the old dealership where he bought it, his high school buddy (who had a '65). all of the previous have been a bust. if anyone on here has ANY information or ideas they would be greatly appreciated.

Without a VIN, your chances are not too good. Also, when did he own it? If in the '90's or '80's, chances are much better than if he owned it back in the 70's: these cars were getting scrapped left and right back then...they were merely used cars. Good luck.

I had a VIN for the 67 I owned in 72 and was not able to find it during the 20 or so years I've been searching. I settled for another 67 that looked very similar. Good luck with your search!

Without a VIN it's not likely and even with it, states are not allowed to release any information about a vehicle to the public since the privacy act of 01 or so. The best shot you have is if your Dad kept a record of who he sold it to and they are still around and have a record of who they sold it to, etc. etc.

Contact the DMV in your father's home state where the car was registered. They should have a record of vehicles he's owned. It may not go that far back but if they have the information, it will definitely include the VIN.
