This picture shows the results of previous owner filling the cooling system on a beautiful 1968 Firebird 400 with a garden hose. He told us he read somewhere on a forum that water cooled better than antifreeze. Truth is water does exchange heat quicker than antifreeze but someone should have told him about rust inhibitors. This engine only has 750 miles on a very high end rebuild but the rebuild was 6 years ago. He obviously didn't drive the car much. The amazing thing is it runs perfect and only slightly warm. The timing cover was completly welded to the block from rust. It took a BIG hammer and a torch to remove it. Both studs snapped of in the block ( really fun). The moral of this story... Antifreeze is cheaper than water. photo.JPG

ALKYGTO,

Good point on the water. These aluminum timing covers may not rust but they dissolve like you poured battery acid on them when you use hard calcium filled water

A few years ago, a trucker came into our shop with a cracked block - he just couldn't understand how his block could be cracked because he only used "creek water" , and that creek never freezes......
